Primary text

If the master states, 'I did not buy you except for yourself,' the slave is manumitted by the master's declaration and his admission concerning the matter that grants freedom. The price becomes due from the slave to his master because Zayd is not obligated to pay the price due to the non-acquisition of the slave by him, and the master does not claim it from Zayd. Therefore, the obligation falls upon the slave, as the apparent beneficiary of the transaction is presumed to be the one who executed the contract.
