What is the liability status of an agent who transgresses regarding the price money provided for a purchase?

If the principal gives the agent money and commissions him to buy something, and the agent transgresses regarding the price money, he becomes liable for it. If he then purchases the item and delivers it, the liability is removed. His taking possession of the purchased item is then considered a possession held in trust.
