Primary text

If Qudamah bin Maz'un consumed wine while legally deeming it permissible, Umar (may God be pleased with him) imposed the prescribed punishment (*hadd*) upon him but did not declare him an apostate. Similarly, Abu Jandal bin Suhayl and a group with him drank wine in Syria, justifying it by citing the verse: 'There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they consumed' (Quran 5:93). They were not deemed apostates; they recognized the prohibition, repented, and received the prescribed punishment. The same ruling applies to all similar cases.

Supporting text

The ruling regarding the consumption of wine being permissible applies to one whose ignorance is excusable concerning established prohibitions, until they are informed, the doubt is removed, and they subsequently deem it permissible.
