Validity of apostasy (Riddah) or conversion to Islam for an insane person

Primary text
The apostasy or conversion to Islam of an insane person is invalid because the insane person lacks the capacity for speech necessary for such declarations. If a person apostatizes while sane and subsequently becomes insane, the prescribed punishment (death) for persistent apostasy cannot be executed during their state of insanity because insanity prevents the imputation of persistence in apostasy and renders the process of seeking repentance (istitaaba) impossible.
