Primary text

If the bequest is 'minus one quarter of the remaining portion after the bequest,' the base fraction denominator is taken as three, and one third of it is added, resulting in four, which constitutes the bequest share. One adds one share and one third to the number of sons and multiplies by three to yield thirteen as the total estate. This can also be calculated by stating the entire estate is three shares plus the bequest, where the bequest is one share minus one quarter of what remains after the bequest (three quarters of a share). Thus, one quarter of a share remains as the bequest, showing the total estate is three and one quarter shares, which simplifies to thirteen parts.
