Primary text

When there are three sons and a bequest is made equal to the share of one son minus one quarter of the total estate, the calculation involves taking the denominator of the fraction (four), adding one part to it to make five, which represents the bequest amount. Then, add one to the number of sons (four) and multiply it by the denominator (four) to get sixteen, which is the total estate shares. The executor receives five shares, and after subtracting four (one quarter of the total estate share count, which is 16/4 = 4), one share remains for him, and each son receives five shares. Alternatively, one quarter of the total estate can be allocated to each son, and the remaining quarter is divided among the four parties (the bequest recipient and the three sons).
