Primary text
Scholars have disagreed concerning the measure of wealth below which making a bequest is not recommended. It has been narrated from Ahmad that if one leaves less than one thousand (units of currency), the bequest is not recommended. 'Ali stated the limit as four hundred dinars. Ibn 'Abbas stated that if a deceased leaves seven hundred dirhams, no bequest should be made, and also stated that one leaving sixty dirhams has not left 'good' wealth. Al-Sha'bi stated that the threshold of wealth is one thousand five hundred. Abu Hanifa stated that the minimum amount is fifty dirhams, which is one share of the least favored heir. Tawoos stated that the threshold for 'good' wealth is eighty dirhams.
