Bequeathing one-fifth (al-Khums) is superior to bequeathing one-fourth or one-third. Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq bequeathed one-fifth, stating he was content with what Allah deemed sufficient for Himself, referencing the verse concerning the share for Allah: Quran 8:41. It is narrated that both Abu Bakr and Ali bequeathed one-fifth. Ali preferred bequeathing one-fifth over one-fourth. Ibrahim stated that those who bequeathed one-fifth were considered better than those who bequeathed one-fourth, who were in turn better than those who bequeathed one-third. Al-Sha'bi narrated that one-fifth was preferred over one-third, marking the limit for the ambitious person. Al-Ala' ibn Ziyad reported that his father sought consensus among scholars regarding the fairest bequest, and they agreed upon one-fifth.
