Requirement for the manumitted slave to be a Muslim

It is only permissible to manumit a Muslim slave. This is derived from the Divine command: 'Then the freeing of a slave' (Quran 4:92). The unqualified statement of a human being must be interpreted in light of the unqualified statement of God, which is understood to apply only to a believing slave.
