Primary text
There are two differing opinions on whether one is obligated to defend oneself by escaping if possible. One view holds that escape is obligatory because defense without harming another party is achievable, similar to the obligation to eat forbidden food when starving to preserve life. The second view holds that defense is not obligatory because defense against harm is not mandated, just as fighting in self-defense is not always mandated.
