Is it permissible to drink from silver vessels?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Beverages (Intoxicants)
Primary text
Drinking from silver vessels is strictly forbidden (Haram). The evidence for this is the severe warning given by the Prophet, peace be upon him: 'The one who drinks from silver vessels, he is only dragging fire of Hell into his stomach.' This is established by analogy to the verse concerning the unlawful consumption of orphans' wealth, which is described as eating fire in the belly. Furthermore, Hudhayfah threw away a silver vessel offered to him, interpreting the prohibition as one requiring absolute avoidance.

A narration from Mu'awiyah ibn Qurrah indicates that there is no harm in drinking from a silver cup. Al-Shafi'i held a view that it is disliked but not forbidden, based on the reasoning that the prohibition stems from imitating non-Arabs, which does not necessitate absolute prohibition.
