Primary text

The preparation of Nabidh (water steeped with dates or raisins) is permitted in all types of containers. This ruling is supported because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, explicitly revoked a previous prohibition. The evidence for this is the narration from Buraydah, where the Messenger of Allah stated that he had prohibited three things but was now commanding them, specifically mentioning the prohibition against drinking only from leather containers (al-adama), and commanding that drinking be allowed in every container, while reinforcing the prohibition against intoxicants. This Hadith, narrated by Muslim, proves the abrogation of the former prohibition.

There is an opinion, attributed to Ahmad ibn Hanbal, that disallows the preparation of Nabidh in specific containers: the *Daba'* (gourd/pumpkin), *al-Hantam* (earthen jars), *an-Naqir* (hollowed wood), and *al-muzaffat* (containers coated with tar/pitch), due to explicit prior prohibitions issued by the Prophet concerning these specific vessels.
