The prescribed punishment for drinking an intoxicant is eighty lashes, provided the drinker willingly consumed it and knew that its large quantity causes intoxication. This ruling was affirmed when Omar ibn al-Khattab consulted the Companions; Ali ibn Abi Talib advised that if the drinker claimed it was lawful, they should be executed for legalizing what God forbade, and if they claimed it was forbidden but drank it anyway, they should be lashed eighty times for falsely attributing legislation to God. Omar applied the eighty lashes.
