Primary text

Nabidh, which is water in which dates or raisins are placed to sweeten it and remove its saltiness, is permissible provided it does not boil or three days pass over it, based on the narration from Ibn 'Abbas. If it reaches a point where it becomes intoxicating, then all intoxicants are forbidden (haram). Evidence for this prohibition comes from the report where the Prophet (peace be upon him) rejected Nabidh made by Abu Hurairah because it had soured, instructing Abu Hurairah to use it to strike a wall, stating it was the drink of one who does not believe in Allah and the Last Day, because at that stage it becomes intoxicating.
