Primary text

The use and crafting of utensils made from gold and silver are prohibited. This prohibition extends to both men and women due to the generality of the evidence. The underlying reason for the prohibition is extravagance (israf) and ostentation (kheela'), which breaks the hearts of the poor, a rationale that applies equally to both genders. While adornment for women using these materials is permitted for the purpose of pleasing their husbands, this permission is restricted to that specific context and does not extend to utensils. If objects like sapphires or similar precious stones, which are more valuable than precious metals, were used as utensils, they would not be prohibited because the poor are generally unaware of them, thus their hearts are not broken by the wealthy possessing them. Furthermore, the scarcity of such stones naturally prevents their widespread adoption, removing the necessity for their specific prohibition, unlike gold and silver.
