How should the whip be wielded during flogging to ensure proper admonishment without causing excessive harm?

The whip should not be raised to its maximum height, nor should it be held too low. The striking hand should not be unnecessarily exposed (i.e., raising the arm too high). The aim is admonishment, not killing.
