Is wine impure (*najis*)?

Wine is impure (*najis*). This is the statement held by the majority of scholars because Allah Almighty prohibited it in its essence. Everything that intoxicates is forbidden and impure due to this established principle. The basis for impurity being linked to prohibition of the essence is analogous to the ruling concerning the pig.
