Is wine (khamr) prohibited?

Book of Beverages (Intoxicants)
Primary text
Wine is definitively prohibited based on the Book (Quran), the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus (Ijma). The prohibition is established by the Quranic injunction to avoid wine, Maysir (gambling), idols, and divining arrows, commanding abstinence until they cease (Quran 5:90-91). The Sunnah confirms this via the Prophet’s saying: "Every intoxicant is khamr, and every khamr is haram," reported by Abu Dawud and Imam Ahmad. Furthermore, extensive prophetic narrations collectively reach the level of undeniable transmission (Tawatur) regarding the prohibition of wine. The entire Ummah reached consensus on its prohibition.

A minority view, attributed to Qudamah ibn Maz'un, Amr ibn Ma'd Yakrib, and Abu Jandal ibn Suhail, suggested wine was permissible based on the verse stating there is no blame on those who believe and do righteous deeds regarding what they consumed (Quran 5:93). However, the Companions clarified the meaning of the verse indicated forbearance for those who consumed it before its prohibition, and they enforced the prescribed punishment upon those who drank it afterward, causing them to recant and solidifying the consensus.
