Primary text

If the lips are struck and rendered completely useless (*ashalluha*), their full *diyah* is required because the function of the organ has been destroyed, comparable to the loss of function in the hands. If the lips contract but fail to close over the teeth, or become so slack they cannot separate from the teeth, the full *diyah* is due for the destruction of their function and beauty. However, if they contract partially, only a proportional compensatory amount (*hukuma*) is due, as their functions have not been entirely nullified.
