What is the compensation for the loss of the sense of smell after the nose is severed?
Chapter on Diyat (Blood Money) for Wounds
Al-Mughni
Book of Blood-Money (Diyyāt)
Primary text
The compensation for the loss of the sense of smell following the severance of the nose is two full *diyyat* (blood money). This is because the sense of smell is a distinct faculty not inherently included in the primary compensation for the nose itself, similar to how hearing is separate from the ear or sight is separate from the eyelids. Severing the nose of a person born without a nose (*akhsham*) also necessitates the full *diyah* because it constitutes a defect separate from the original condition, analogous to the issues mentioned.
