If the fetus is expelled alive and then dies before the mother, and the mother subsequently dies, the mother inherits the *diyah* of the fetus, and then the mother's heirs inherit from her. If the mother dies before the fetus is expelled, and the fetus is subsequently expelled dead, neither inherits from the other.
