Primary text
Blood money (*diyah*) for accidental homicide (*khata'*) paid by the 'Aqilah is stipulated to be paid in three installments over three years. This ruling is established by the actions of Umar and Ali, may Allah be pleased with them, and no dissenter among the Companions is known. Scholars followed this practice. The rationale is that since this money is due as a means of consolation (*muwasah*), it is not due immediately, similar to *Zakat*. Every *diyah* borne by the 'Aqilah is postponed for this reason.
