What is the prescribed compensation for the inability to retain urine due to injury (a damaged bladder)?
Chapter on Diyat (Blood Money) for Wounds
Al-Mughni
Book of Blood-Money (Diyyāt)
Primary text
The compensation for the complete inability to retain urine, due to injury to the bladder, is the full blood money (*diyah*). This opinion is held by Ibn Jurayh, Abu Thawr, and Abu Hanifa. The justification is that the bladder's function—retaining urine—is a major utility comparable to that of other vital organs for which full *diyah* is already established. Similarly, the inability to retain feces due to injury to the rectum carries the full *diyah*. If both these functions (retention of urine and feces) are lost simultaneously due to a single injurious act, the perpetrator owes two full *diyahs*, just as if hearing and sight were lost simultaneously by one act. This ruling is narrated from 'Umar and Zayd, may Allah be pleased with them, and adopted by scholars whose opinions have reached us.

A separate narration mentioned by Ibn Abi Musa suggests a ruling of one-third of the *diyah* for an injury to the bladder.
