What is the prescribed compensation for successive wounds inflicted in sequence?
Chapter on Diyat (Blood Money) for Wounds
Al-Mughni
Book of Blood-Money (Diyyāt)
Primary text
For successive wounds, the compensation for each wound is calculated based on the prescribed *arsh* (partial compensation) for that specific type of injury, irrespective of the subsequent injury. If the first injury is a *muwaddihah* (a wound exposing bone), the liability is the *arsh* of the *muwaddihah*. If the second injury is a *hashimah* (a wound fracturing the bone), the liability on the second person is five parts of the full *arsh* of the *hashimah*. If the third injury is a *munqqilah* (a wound displacing the bone), the liability on the third person is five parts of the full *arsh* of the *munqqilah*. If the fourth injury is a *ma'moumah* (a wound reaching the brain), the liability on the fourth person is eighteen and one-third parts of the full *arsh* of the *ma'moumah*. This ruling is the position held by the majority of scholars, including the people of Medina, Kufa, the Ahl al-Hadith, and the Ashab al-Ra'y.
