Chapter on Diyat (Blood Money) for Wounds

Book of Blood-Money (Diyyāt)
Primary text
If an assault causes the loss of the victim's intellect, hearing, sight, and speech, four full blood moneys (Diyyat) are obligatory, in addition to the compensation (Arsh) for the physical wound itself. This ruling is supported by the precedent set by Umar, who ruled accordingly when a man struck another with a stone, causing these losses while the victim was still alive. The basis for this ruling is that the loss of each distinct utility necessitates its full associated blood money, similar to cumulative injuries. However, if the victim dies as a result of the injury, only one blood money for the life is due, as the blood moneys for all individual utilities are subsumed within the blood money for the person, similar to the loss of limbs.
