What is the ruling if a person with two hands on one arm severs a single complete hand?
Chapter on Diyat (Blood Money) for Wounds
Al-Mughni
Book of Blood-Money (Diyyāt)
Primary text
If the possessor of the hand with two appendages severs a single complete hand, retaliation (*qisas*) is mandated according to Ibn Hamid, because this is a defect that does not preclude retaliation, similar to a superfluous item in possession.
Supporting text
According to others, retaliation is not mandated so that one hand is not taken for two, nor can one hand be severed because it is unknown which is the principal one, and an extra part cannot be taken in place of a principal part.
