What is the ruling regarding the two buttocks (*alyatin*)?
Chapter on Diyat (Blood Money) for Wounds
Al-Mughni
Book of Blood-Money (Diyyāt)
Primary text
Some scholars state that the full *diya* is due for the two buttocks, and half the *diya* for each one individually. This view is held by 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, Al-Nakha'i, Al-Shafi'i, and the Companions of Al-Ra'y. The justification is that they are two organs of the same type possessing apparent aesthetic value and complete utility, as one sits upon them like cushions, thus requiring the full *diya*, and half for one, analogous to the hands. The buttocks are defined as the elevated and superior part of the back above the level of the thighs.
Supporting text
The full *diya* is due if they are removed down to the underlying bone, and a proportional amount is due for removing a part of them, as what incurs *diya* has a proportional value in its parts. If the extent is unknown, a discretionary indemnity (*hukuma*) is due because the defect's measure is unknown.
