What is the effect of the possessor admitting ownership to one party at the beginning of the dispute?

If the possessor admits ownership to one specific claimant from the outset, that admitted claimant becomes the possessor (*sahib al-yad*). This is because the initial possessor's holding is considered a proxy for the hand of the one to whom the admission was made.
