What is the ruling when a slave claims manumission based on two witnesses whose integrity is unverified?

Primary text
If a slave claims manumission by his master and presents two witnesses whose uprightness (*'adalah*) has not been established, the ruler (*Hakim*) must intercede between the slave and the master pending investigation into the witnesses' integrity. The ruler must hire the slave out to a trustworthy person who will cover the slave's maintenance from his earnings and retain the surplus. If the two witnesses are confirmed to be upright, the remaining surplus of the slave's earnings is given to him. If they are found to be corrupt (*fasiq*), the slave is returned to his master. This intercession is mandated to prevent a situation where the slave might be subjected to unlawful sexual intercourse if the claim fails, which would happen if no separation were made.
