Primary text

It is not permissible to purchase the item qualifying for Zakat payment from a relative to whom one owes lineage obligations (Mahram). If this action is performed, the slave is freed (if the item purchased was a slave), but the Zakat obligation remains undischarged. The prohibition is based on the principle that the benefit of the Zakat returns to the relative, which is impermissible, similar to directly giving the Zakat to them. Furthermore, the act of freeing the slave is considered a recompense and a maintenance of kinship ties, which cannot be counted towards the Zakat obligation, analogous to the spending on one's relatives.

Al-Hasan permits using Zakat funds to free one's father because the actual Zakat payment does not reach the father; rather, the purchase price is given to the seller. This view is countermanded by the primary opinion.
