Primary text
It is permissible to purchase a Muslim prisoner from the hands of the polytheists using Zakat funds. This is permissible because it constitutes freeing a neck from captivity, which is analogous to freeing a slave from servitude. Furthermore, it brings honor to the religion, thus resembling its expenditure for those whose hearts are to be reconciled (Al-Mu'allafati Qulubuhum). It is also analogous to giving the funds to someone indebted to free their own neck from debt.
