Primary text

The righteous path supports accepting the gift even if a peer refuses it for piety reasons, provided the primary acceptance is lawful. This is illustrated by Al-Hasan's argument to Ibn Sirin: If a thief took both cloaks and returned only Al-Hasan's, Al-Hasan would accept his, indicating that an individual's choice to forgo a right does not obligate others to forgo theirs if the source is permissible.
