Primary text

The established consensus among scholars, as narrated from those like Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, is that the share of the Messenger of Allah and the share of the near relatives are both designated for the provision of horses and equipment (*al-khayl wa al-'iddah*) for the cause of Allah (*fi sabilillah*). This was the practice during the Caliphates of Abu Bakr and 'Umar. This treatment aligns with the opinion that the purpose behind attributing these shares to Allah and the Messenger signifies that their purpose is general welfare (*maslaha*), not exclusive ownership by the Prophet (PBUH), thus preventing the share from lapsing upon his death and making it applicable for Islamic necessities.

Abu Bakr and 'Umar are reported to have channeled the *Dhawi al-Qurba* share into the military efforts (*fi sabilillah*). Ibn 'Abbas expressed that they initially assumed the share belonged to them, but their people refrained from this, potentially referring to the actions of Abu Bakr and 'Umar in directing it toward military means.
