The definitive position holds that the share for Al-Mu'allafati Qulubuhum remains valid. The evidence for this is the Divine Statement: {And those whose hearts are to be reconciled} (Quran 9:60), which is in Surah Bara'ah, one of the last verses revealed to the Prophet, peace be upon him. It is established that the Messenger of Allah gave to both Muslim and non-Muslim converts among them. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, also gave thirty camels to 'Adi ibn Hatim when he presented three hundred camels of Zakat. Opposing the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger without proof is impermissible. The lack of distribution by 'Umar and 'Uthman does not establish abrogation; rather, it suggests they did not require giving to them due to a lack of necessity.

The opposing view, held by Abu Hanifa and one opinion attributed to Al-Shafi'i, is that their share is terminated. This is based on the report that 'Umar refused to give Zakat money to a polytheist seeking aid, citing the verse: {So whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve} (Quran 18:29). Furthermore, it is noted that no transmission exists showing 'Umar, 'Uthman, or 'Ali giving to this group, arguing that Islam's victory and the subjugation of polytheists negate the need for reconciliation through giving. Ahmad is also reported to have stated that their ruling has been cut off today.
