Primary text

The consensus of the majority holds that the share designated for slaves (al-Riqab) is established. It is agreed upon within the school of thought that Zakat can be distributed to contractually obligated slaves (Mukatabun) for their manumission.

Supporting text

Imam Malik dissented, holding that the share of al-Riqab is strictly for the manumission of slaves, and he does not favor assisting a Mukatab with Zakat funds. This view contradicts the apparent meaning of the verse, as a Mukatab is still a slave, and the general wording of the verse should include him.
