Primary text
A slave who is half-free is permitted to marry three women. This ruling is established by Ahmad in the narration of Muhammad ibn al-Hakam. The basis for this limitation to three marriages is that the count of those who can be legally married (mankūhāt) is divisible by parts in his case, similar to how prescribed punishments (Hudud) are divided. Therefore, his capacity for marriage is half that of a free man and half that of a full slave, resulting in a total capacity of three.
