The established narration from Ibn Abbas, supported by numerous chains of transmission, indicates that the triple divorce counts as three. Therefore, the report stating it counts as one is rebutted by the overwhelming number of narrations from Ibn Abbas supporting the threefold effect. It is also suggested that the statement attributed to Ibn Abbas means people issued only one divorce during the time of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and Abu Bakr, as it is inconceivable that Umar would contradict the practice of the Prophet's time, or that Ibn Abbas would both narrate something contrary to it and subsequently rule against it.
