What is the ruling if the husband says, 'You are divorced the day Zayd arrives' and Zayd arrives at night?

The divorce does not occur because the condition (the arrival within the day) was not met. However, if the intent of 'the day' (*al-yawm*) was the time, then the divorce occurs at the time of his arrival, because time itself is sometimes referred to as a day, as evidenced by the verse: Quran 8:16.
