What is the ruling when a husband states concerning food, 'You are divorced if I do not eat this loaf'?
Chapter on Explicit Divorce and Others
Al-Mughni
Book of Divorce
Primary text
If the husband eats the loaf, he incurs divorce (Hanith); otherwise, he does not.
Supporting text
If the husband states, 'You are divorced as long as I have not eaten it,' and he was truthful (meaning he truly had not eaten it), he does not incur divorce. If he was lying (meaning he had eaten it), divorce occurs, similar to saying, 'By God, I have not eaten it.'
