Primary text

If a person swears to perform an action without specifying a time verbally or by intention, the obligation stands for performance at any time (on the basis of postponement or delay, *at-tarākhi*). This is because the statement is absolute concerning the entire duration, and thus not restricted unless explicitly limited. Evidence for this includes the divine commands to the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding the Hour and resurrection, such as "Say: Yes, by my Lord, it will surely come upon you" and "Say: Yes, by my Lord, you will be resurrected." Furthermore, the promise to enter the Sacred Mosque securely, if God wills, was stated in the year of Hudaybiyyah (year 6 AH) and was realized in the year of the Conquest (year 8 AH), demonstrating delay.

There is no known disagreement regarding this principle. This is exemplified by the report that when 'Umar asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about visiting and circumambulating the House, and whether the Prophet had specified that year, the Prophet confirmed the visit would happen but not necessarily that year.
