Primary text

The ruling concerning the suspension of manumission is identical to the ruling concerning the suspension of divorce. If a man declares, 'One of my slaves will be freed tomorrow,' and tomorrow arrives, lots are cast among the slaves. If the lot falls upon a slave who has been sold, then none of the remaining slaves are freed.

Supporting text

According to the view of the judge, the manumission ought to be fixed upon the remaining slaves. This should also be the position of Abu Hanifa and Al-Shafi'i, because they maintain that the man has the right to specify the manumission. If he states, 'If one of them is sold, then the manumission is diverted from it,' the manumission becomes fixed upon the remaining slaves.
