Primary text

If the dower object both increases in one manner (e.g., learns a craft) and decreases in another (e.g., forgets another craft or becomes sickly), the option lies with both parties. Either party may refuse to accept the specific object and instead demand its equivalent monetary value. If they agree upon half of the object itself, that is permissible. If the wife refuses to render her half, she may do so due to the increase she gained. If the husband refuses to relinquish his right to half, he may do so due to the deficiency he sustained. If either party insists on refusing the object, they revert to claiming half of its monetary value.
