Primary text

If the permission for teaching the Quran as *mahr* is accepted, it is mandatory to specify what will be taught, whether it is a particular Surah, several Surahs, or specific verses, because Surahs and verses carry different values. A debate exists whether the manner of recitation (Qira'ah) must also be specified. One view holds that specification of the recitation method is necessary because recitations vary in difficulty, such as the recitation of Hamzah, which is considered difficult, while others are easy; this difficulty difference necessitates specification, similar to specifying verses.

The opposing view holds that specification of the recitation is unnecessary because the differences between recitations are minor, and every letter stands in place of its alternative. This is evidenced by the Prophet, peace be upon him, not specifying the recitation for the woman, even though recitations varied greatly in his time. This situation is analogous to specifying a measure of grain from a bulk pile (*sabra*).
