Is it permissible for a Muslim husband to endow his Christian wife with the teaching of a Surah from the Quran?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Dowry (Mahr)
Primary text
It is not permissible for a Muslim husband to endow his Christian wife with the teaching of a Surah from the Quran; however, she is entitled to the *mahr al-mithl* (dower of equivalent status). The basis for this is that a person in *janabah* (major ritual impurity) is prohibited from reciting the Quran, despite their belief in its truth, and the disbeliever is even more deserving of prohibition. Furthermore, the Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited traveling with the Quran to the enemy's land for fear of its being touched by impure hands, which supports the principle of prevention as a priority over permission. The argument based on the verse concerning hearing the word of Allah (Quran 9:6) is invalidated because hearing is not equivalent to memorization or teaching.
