Is a marriage contract valid if four women are contracted simultaneously with one dowry (mahr)?

Primary text
The marriage contract is valid when a man marries four women in a single contract with a single dowry, whether their guardian is the same person, or they share one *Mawla* (patron), or they have no guardian and a judge contracts them, or if they have guardians who delegate a single agent to contract their marriages to one man. This view is held by Abu Hanifa and is the more commonly accepted of the two opinions of Al-Shafi'i. The legal justification is that while the detailed division of the dowry is unknown, the total sum stipulated for the collective contract is known. This is analogous to purchasing four slaves for a single price, or buying a heap (*sabra*) of grain for a fixed price without knowing the exact measure of its *qafiz* (measure).

The second opinion holds that the dowry is invalid (*fasid*) and obligatory *mahr al-mithl* (the customary dowry) must be paid for each woman because the dowry owed to each individual is unknown.
