What is the ruling on the *mahr* when the husband purchases his wife (who was previously his slave)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Dowry (Mahr)
Primary text
There are two views concerning the case where a free man purchases his wife (who was previously his slave). These views are based upon the two narrations concerning the wife purchasing herself back from her husband.
Supporting text
One view states that her *mahr* is halved because the sale that necessitates dissolution is completed by the master acting as the husband's representative and the wife, thus resembling *khul'*. The second view states the *mahr* is forfeited because the dissolution follows her acceptance, resembling her invalidating the *Li'an*.
