What is the ruling if a non-relative pays the stipulated *mahr* on behalf of the husband?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Dowry (Mahr)
Primary text
If a man pays the stipulated *mahr* for the husband, this payment is valid. If the husband divorces her before consummation, half of the paid amount returns to the payer (the non-relative). If the marriage contract is nullified due to an act originating from her side, the entire amount returns to the payer.
Supporting text
According to an alternative view regarding the payment made by a substitute for the husband, the amount returns to the one who paid it (the non-relative) regardless of the circumstances of separation.
