What is the ruling regarding a third opinion concerning the paid *mahr* when a non-relative pays it?

There exists a third opinion, mentioned by the Shafi'i scholars and cited as a third view for our school by Al-Qadi, which states that half of the paid *mahr* returns to the non-relative who paid it.
