Primary text
There is no stipulated maximum limit for the dower, by the consensus of the people of knowledge, as stated by Ibn Abd al-Barr. Evidence for this is found in the verse: {And if you wish to exchange a wife in place of another and you have given one of them a குவிンtār (a large amount), take nothing back from it} (Quran 4:20). Furthermore, it is reported that 'Umar gave Umm Kulthum bint 'Ali a dower of forty thousand, and that he intended to prohibit excessive dowers upon remembering this verse.

The definition of a qintar varies: Abu Salih defined it as one hundred ratls; Abu Sa'id al-Khudri defined it as a leather bag full of gold; and Mujahid defined it as seventy thousand mithqals.
