Primary text

The eclipse prayer (Salat al-Kusuf) is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah). This is established because the Prophet, peace be upon him, performed it and commanded it. The time for this prayer extends from the onset of the eclipse until it fully clears. If the prayer is missed within this window, it is not to be made up (Qada). Evidence for this timing is found in the narration where the Prophet, peace be upon him, stated, "When you see that, hasten to the prayer until it clears," making the clearing the final limit for the prayer. Furthermore, the prayer was legislated as a supplication to God to remove the eclipse; thus, once the eclipse is gone, the objective of the prayer is fulfilled.
